Asics’ brand Onitsuka Tiger Japan previewed their spring/summer ’08 footwear and apparel collections at Modapolitica in Aoyama on Tuesday. The collection, “Crossover”, which consists of a variety of traditional Japanese motifs is a collaboration of themes not usually equated with sportswear: tradition and modernism, legend and innovation, retro and technology, e.g. ’70s-sytle basketball sneakers made from “BanshuOri” textiles that originated in Asics‘ hometown, Kobe. One more thing to keep an eye on: this season’s collaboration with Nextide, a company creating “universal design” goods. Both the Procourt and the Run & Gun sneakers have been designed to be taken off easily with one hand, allowing people to slip in and out regardless of age, gender, or ability. [ LP]
